CHAPTER SEVEN: Seven Secrets for Success

So we lured you to the end of the book by promising some secrets about how to live the healthy life. Parts of the secrets were already revealed, but we have more juicy facts for you. We suggest you share these secrets with everyone you know. Hopefully, they won’t be able to keep them to themselves either!
Secret #1: Gastrointestinal Health is Key to Overall Health
We sure hope that by this point in the workbook you have a better understanding of the importance of your nutrition and intestinal health. Like a thriving metropolis, the human body has pathways, inhabitants, hubs of activity, and an amazing flow of energy. Rather than flat streets, the body uses tubes to transport fluids, cells, nutrients, and waste to designated locations. One of the most important tubes is 30 feet long and runs from the mouth to the anus. That tube is the “main street” of the body and is called the gastrointestinal tract.
If any part of the tube is clogged or sluggish, the result is a biological traffic jam.
Many illnesses can be traced back to a problem in the gastrointestinal tract. When was the last time you had heartburn? Do you know anyone who has had his or her gallbladder removed? The rising epidemic of diabetes indicates a nationwide problem with the pancreas. Air escaping out either end of the tube is common, but should be considered a cause for concern rather than a joke. Thousands upon thousands of people suffer with intestinal problems and many of those dear people will die from their discomfort. Colon cancer is the second leading cancer in America. This means people are dying because they are eating too much and going to the bathroom too little!
Impact on Weight
People with weight issues usually have gastrointestinal tract issues. As the undigested food and uneliminated waste backs up in the tube, it’s like a clog in a toilet. The new additions must go somewhere. In a toilet, it overflows. In a human body, it gets stored in the cells, tubes, and tissues. People literally begin to fill up. Beer bellies are not full of beer!
Rotting food particles inside the body create acids that compromise the integrity of the intestinal walls, which may eventually become porous and leak toxic juices into other parts of the body. Some studies link heart problems to colon problems. Aging food particles also reduce the ability of the small intestine to absorb nutrients, which means the rest of your body will become malnourished. Due to the fact that the body is starving for nutrients it will compel a person to overeat. This compounds the biological traffic jam even more.
The cycle is a vicious one, but solutions do exist. Because not knowing this secret is the cause of so many deaths and the failures of many diets, we have written a book about it. You just happen to be reading it. Anyone who cleanses and nourishes the body with the DAILY 7 can be confident of being on the right path to a healthy life.
Secret #2: Share the Hope of The DAILY 7 with Others
Some good is in the bad. Without pain, we wouldn’t appreciate relief. Suffering tenderizes our callousness. Discomfort and sorrow bring us into each other’s arms. We pray for healing by bedsides and along roadsides. If only the rain would fall with holy water upon the flesh and make it whole again. We need not suffer desperately. Living water always falls from heaven, but healing comes from within. And from that wellspring of hope inside the human soul, the will to live ignites. Yes, we pay the consequences of our foolish decisions, but we always want a way out of it. We wish for someone to come along and show us another path. Rarely is the alternative easy, but when every other way leads to death, something inside says, “I’ll give this a try.”
Having finished this workbook, you have information to help someone who has no hope and is suffering desperately. We all hurt, but we can all heal. We can bring out the good from the bad, shine the light in the darkness, and hold someone’s hand as we lead them out of the dungeon that once held us captive, too. Open your arms wide and gather the hurting souls. Show them a better way. Begin with the simple things, the physical things. When they find relief in those, they will continue with you to the destination of good health and abundant living in all things.
Links in a Chain
We are each like a link in a chain. You may be the only one some hurting person will know that can point them in the right direction. You hold in your hands the knowledge to help yourself and many, many other people. What will you do with it? The best choice would be to apply the information to your own life and share it with the people in your part of the world who express a desire to feel better. You can offer them hope. You can be their encourager and friend as they walk their personal journey to health. The Buddy System: The DAILY 7 is so easy that two people can go through the workbook together. We call this “The Buddy System”. The buddy system has helped people confidently share the hope of wellness with their family and friends in the privacy of their own home and works around their busy schedule. Two “buddies” get together for one hour each week for four weeks. They read through the workbook together and talk about the topics, encouraging each other to stay the course. In the fourth week, each person is encouraged to choose another buddy and go through the program again. This gives the DAILY 7 the power to replicate itself. Imagine how many people could be reached with a message of hope if we all chose to do this.
DAILY 7 Workshops
Workshops are also an effective method for helping people get a good start and stay consistent with the DAILY 7. A workshop is similar to the Buddy System in format, except that you have more buddies. We suggest classes no larger than 10 people. You still meet for one hour each week for four weeks. People are more likely to make the jump to a more natural lifestyle when they attend workshops because they get their questions answered promptly and are encouraged by the group to make good choices.
Workshops are easy to facilitate because you do not need to teach the DAILY 7 materials. All you do in a workshop is highlight important concepts, answer questions (by pointing back to the workbook), and love people.

Secret #3: Explore Other Avenues of Healing & Education
The path to healing can feel like climbing a mountain. Parts of the journey can be steep and rocky, especially if you are climbing alone. Thousands of people have climbed these trails before you and some of them have chosen to give their lives to help others succeed in reaching the summit of good health. These people are unique and have chosen certain therapies as their special way of being helpful. Be brave and explore the various therapies available that will help you most effectively on this part of your journey. Around the corner, you may need a different therapy or a different person to help you. That’s okay. It’s part of the journey.
We would like to introduce you to a few therapies that we find most helpful.
Wow! There is nothing like a great massage to work out aches and pains! Unfortunately, not all massage therapists are great. To find a therapist in your area we suggest calling the ones listed in the phone book that have ads that are appealing to you. Contact them and ask them if they do any techniques that correct poor posture. Chat with them for a while on the phone and ask them what types of conditions they have had success in treating. If you feel comfortable with their skills and personality, then set an appointment.
Once you have had your first massage with that therapist you should know whether or not you think he or she will be able to help you. A really good therapist should give you a significant amount of relief with just one session. If you don’t get relief, then call the next one in the phone book and schedule a session. Don’t stop searching until you find the right one. Hundreds of different styles of massage offer tremendous relief from stiff muscles and joints. Once you find your therapist, ask him or her to put you on a treatment plan to get your posture corrected. Follow through with the whole treatment plan and then stay on some kind of a maintenance plan (once per week, per month, etc.). You may spend a few hundred or even thousands dollars getting your posture corrected, but you’ll enjoy your life so much more without all the pain. Secret #4: The Mind Affects the Body
Food is fuel for the body, and emotions are fuel for the mind. Even though we have been taught that our emotions are small and insignificant, they are in fact quite large. They are so large sometimes that we don’t know what to do with them. Even though the dictionary defines emotions and feelings as the same thing, they are different. Feelings, such as happiness, joy, sorrow, anger, etc., are spontaneous and cannot be altered. Emotions are the expression of the feelings. Emotions are under our control because a thought is attached to the emotion. For example, if someone insults you about your weight, you might feel hurt and sad. What is the thought that occurs immediately after the feeling? One thought could be, “He’s right, I am a failure.” Another thought could be, “What a jerk!” In this example, the same feeling had the potential to generate two different emotions – discouragement or indignation.
You cannot help the feeling, but what do you do with emotion? As a child, your parents decided what you did with your emotions. Some parents use the principle of, “Children are to be seen and not heard.” Children in these situations are punished for expressing emotions such as anger, fear, or joy. They learn to stop expressing emotions and stuff them way down inside their subconscious mind. Whether your childhood was like that or not, people of all ages struggle with how to appropriately deal with emotions. Here are some other things people do with emotions:
Stuffing – not allowing the emotion to be processed
Blocking – pretending that the emotion did not exist
Venting – spewing the emotion all over everyone else (it still stays inside)
Ignoring – the emotion is felt, but not one thought is allowed to rest on it
Focusing – some people stay fixated on the emotion and cannot move forward
Cells of Emotion
If we are not able to process our emotions so that they can become a memory without an emotional charge, quantum physics tells us that the emotions will reside in some other part of the body, inside the cells themselves. Every cell has the ability to store and process information, such as the instructions for carrying out its unique function. Emotion is another form of information. The mind’s recollection of the event may fade, but the emotion within the cell will retain its original strength for benefit or harm because the information has not been changed. Unresolved emotions may impact how the body functions. We may subconsciously carry extra weight to protect our internal organs, which are housing our internal emotions. Karol K. Truman wrote a book called, “Feelings Buried Alive Never Die.”
Through her research, she has discovered that certain emotions are stored in specific organs and areas of the body. Because gastrointestinal issues plague many people, let’s examine what emotions may cause discomfort in this part of the body.
Excessive Appetite: Feeding the need for love, acceptance, and protection
Mouth problems: Resistant to change, Fears moving out of comfort zone, opinionated
Stomach: Our sense of security feels threatened, Fears new ideas, Lack of affection, Condemning the success of other people, Unhappy feelings
Abdominal Area: Incorrect use of judgment, Identifies with possessions and has little sense of self, Worrying about others, Feels responsible for giving help and encouragement, Feeling undue tension, fear and anxiety which constricts energy flow, Disharmony and bondage in relationships, Bound up in present fears and not trusting.
Gallbladder: Feelings of bitterness, Feelings of anger, Wanting to force things
Immune System (60% of the immune system is in the intestines): Giving up Inability to care (feeling) for others
Pancreas: Feelings of judgment, Feelings of guilt, Low self-esteem, Suppressing laughter, Incorrect use of ego, Fearful of not having ample means, Unable to control outer situation; tries to control a substitute, Unwillingness to relinquish control Inability to eliminate possessive attitudes, Feeling that “everything is out of my control”, Feeling “there’s no use trying, anymore”, Feeling of “I’m not enough”, Feels the joy of living is gone / not allowing joy
Bowels: Fear of displeasing a loved one, Fear of releasing the old that is no longer useful, Bottled up hate
If any of these feelings made you think, “That’s me,” consider how those feelings and their corresponding emotions may be affecting you physically. Appropriately handling emotions, especially old ones, requires that we coax them out with our mind from the areas where they are residing in our bodies and take a good, loving look at them. Consider why you feel the way you do. If you were a child when the emotion occurred, return to that time in your mind and look at the situation with your adult mind. Journaling is a valuable tool for sorting through emotions. Many people also benefit from sessions with a good counselor. If you touch the emotion with your mind and make sense of it or release it with forgiveness, healing can occur. The body can once again (and often, immediately) function without discomfort.
An old saying in India is “If you want to see what your thoughts were like yesterday, look at your body today. If you want to see what your body will be like tomorrow, look at your thoughts today.”
Thoughts are energy with purpose. The purpose of a thought is to initiate the distribution of information. The information is often encased in an instruction. If you think, “I am so stressed out.” Your body will take that thought as an instruction to either create or alleviate stress. If your thought is particularly negative, the body may create a stress reaction by pumping more adrenalin for energy, increasing the heart rate, or shutting down the bowels. Or, if the thought about stress has more of a constructive feeling to it, your body may send out endorphins to calm the nervous system, move to relax muscles, or crave a warm beverage. Whether you acknowledge this fact or not, your mind is affecting your body every moment of every day. Therefore, a secret to better health is to examine your thoughts more carefully and direct them more purposefully.
Directing your thoughts toward healing will promote healing. If you have a pain, for example, you can react negatively with fear, or you can react inquisitively with a desire to know why the pain is occurring. Once you discover the cause of the pain, direct positive thoughts of healing and restoration to that area. Then, take positive actions that will alleviate the problem. Choose to be proactive, rather than reactive.
Secret #5: If You’re Flowing, You’re Going
Have you ever smelled a stagnant pond? If you have, your mind can recall it instantly. The unpleasant smells come from the buildup of bacteria and debris that collect in the pond because it has no fresh water coming in and no stored water going out. Eventually, the water could become like the Dead Sea in which nothing can live. To change the condition of the pond requires changing the flow of water. An active source of water must be located and connected to the pond. The exit pathway where the water flows out must be lower than the incoming water source. As the water leaves the pond, it must have another place to go so that it does not back up into the pond again.
You can apply this to every part of your life – body, mind, and spirit. In your body, we have already established that the flow of the gastrointestinal tract is vital to health. You need good, clean water and nutrients flowing into your body. By design, you have a lower outlet and help from gravity to eliminate waste. Humans built toilets so that it doesn’t back up once it leaves your body. How ingenious!
Emotionally and intellectually, you can avoid becoming stagnant by educating yourself about life and things that interest you. If you let old negative emotions stay inside, you will have emotional problems. If you try to release emotions without knowing where to put them to rest, they will return to you over and over again. Allow fresh emotions and experiences to flow to you and through you.Leave your mind open to consider all of the mysteries and wonders of life.
Flowing in the spirit is the most liberating and exhilarating experience for a human being. We are, after all, spiritual beings having a physical experience. Most of us know when we are with someone who is spiritually stagnant. They hold to old truths without allowing them to transform and come alive. Truth is a living thing, waiting to reveal itself to us once we reach the point in the journey where it temporarily rests in anticipation of our arrival. The possibilities for spiritual development are limitless. Of the three, it is the easiest flow to establish. All you need is a willing heart and the word “Yes.”
How To Tell If You’re Flowing
Sitting in front of the television in a catatonic state is stagnation. Watching a movie that stirs your soul is flowing. Holding a grudge is stagnation. Forgiveness is flowing. Fear is stagnation. Exploration is flowing. You get the idea. If your life stinks, it’s probably due to being stagnant in some area.
Secret #6: Live by Principles Rather than Rules
We mentioned this before, but we want to emphasize the concept and give you practical principles to choose from.
If you really want to be healthier, choose to live by principles instead of rules. Rules say, “do this and don’t do that.” Rules are made to be broken, right? Principles are statements of basic truth. Truth cannot be broken. An example of a principle is “Organic food is better than non-organic food.” The principle does not say, “Don’t buy non-organic food.” It’s just stating a truth. When faced with a choice between an organic and non-organic food, the principle will guide your choice.
Choose not to restrict yourself with rules. Instead, set yourself free from things that bring you harm by applying principles of truth to your daily life. Here are some principles from the DAILY 7 that you might consider choosing to guide your health decisions:
• A healthy body and mind maintains a healthy weight.
• Eliminating refined sugars and starches from the diet reduces acidity, boosts the immune system, and allows the pancreas to rest.
• Eating high-quality proteins helps maintain muscle mass, thus increasing metabolism.
• It’s good to have someone to encourage you along the journey of life.
• When you change your thoughts, you change your world.
• Movement and flexibility are key elements of health.
• Adding high-quality nutritional supplements to the daily diet is essential for optimum health.
• Essential fatty acids (EFA’s) play an important role in health, including hormone balance, nervous system function, and bowel health.
• Nutritional deficiencies can be avoided by taking high-quality vitamin and mineral supplements every day.
• Taking an enzyme supplement when needed aids digestion.
• Taking a probiotic supplement enhances immune function and bowel health.
• A hydrated body is more efficient and healthy than a dehydrated body.
• Purified water is better for health than unpurified water.
• A wise health practice is to be constantly in tune with the needs of your body.
• In a healing crisis, you may feel worse before you feel better. Stay the course.
• Stress is harmful to health.
• When the body’s internal pH is balanced, minerals are more easily absorbed and symptoms of acidity are reduced.
• It is important to eliminate toxic substances from both our internal and external environments.
Look for other principles in your everyday life. Seek to find your guiding principles – the ones that direct all of your decisions and behaviors. Purify your principles.
Secret #7: Avoid Top Killers
Here is what the Center for Disease Control report on “Leading Causes of Death in the United States” has to say about the top four killers:
“Chronic diseases – such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes – are among the most prevalent, costly, and preventable of all health problems. Seven of every ten Americans who die each year, or more than 1.7 million people, die of a chronic disease. Chronic diseases are not prevented by vaccines, nor do they just disappear. To a large degree, the major chronic disease killers are an extension of what people do, or not do, as they go about the business of daily living. Health-damaging behaviors – in particular, tobacco use, lack of physical activity, and poor nutrition – are major contributors to heart disease and cancer, our nation’s leading killers.”
Sad, isn’t it? So, the secret is out. Our daily choices affect our health and our longevity. We need not die of chronic disease.
The CDC identifies the risk factors and the strategies for avoiding these diseases:
Heart disease and stroke are the first and third leading causes of death for both men and women in America.
Risk factors are high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, tobacco use, physical inactivity, and being overweight or obese.
Strategies for avoidance include monitoring heart health, knowing signs and symptoms of a heart attack, getting regular exercise, and making healthy food and supplement choices.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death, accounting for one in every four deaths. Lung cancer is the biggest cancer foe, due to tobacco usage. Colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon) is next highest, followed by breast cancer and prostate cancer.
Risk factors include indigestion, constipation, hormonal imbalances, exposure to xenoestrogens, being overweight or obese, and overexposure to sunlight.
Strategies for avoidance include prevention through improving the diet and applying the concepts of the DAILY 7. Reduce exposure to xenoestrogens and balance hormones. Avoid tobacco use and increase physical activity. Limit exposure to direct sun.
Diabetes is the fastest rising chronic disease in America. Some are calling it an epidemic. Millions of Americans have diabetes and millions more are unaware that they either have the disease or are pre-diabetic.
Risk factors include a diet high in carbohydrates, especially simple carbohydrates, and low in fiber content. Genetics has been shown to be a factor for some people, but diet is the primary cause of development and progression of the condition.
Strategies for avoidance include blood sugar monitoring, eating a healthy and balanced diet, getting regular exercise, reducing sugar and high-glycemic food intake, and taking digestive enzymes to assist in the breakdown of carbohydrates and fats.
Avoiding Chronic (Ongoing) Disease
If you knew someone was waiting around the corner with a knife to stab you, wouldn’t you do whatever you could to avoid that corner? You would not pretend the person wasn’t there and walk by anyway. You would find ways to protect yourself or avoid the confrontation altogether. That is what you must do with your health, as well. Pretending the dangers don’t exist could shorten your life. As you were reading through the list of killers could you see how the concepts in the DAILY 7 help to protect you from them?
Diligently applying the concepts in the DAILY 7 will make you health savvy. People will notice that you look different – healthier. You now have a message of hope to give to the people you care about, who may be headed for a confrontation with one of these killers. Don’t keep this secret to yourself.
